Ar a conference organized in preparation for the 1982 United Nations World Assembly on Aging, the World Health Organization was urged to support the seerch for new knowledge as a strategy for ameliorating the many distresninp, a f f l i c t i o n s of old age arid for containing the costs of care in the face of growins needs, especielly in developing countries (1). Clinical research, epidemiological studies and health services research were considered to be of major importance end of universal concern. The present Workshop was organized for the purpose of elaborating proposals in the two lestaentioned areas, especially proposals chat would forge links between industrialized and developing countries in a comon research endeavour that addresses the problems posed by the changing age composition of the world'a population.
